A Humble salad & Some Tart by Caitlin  July 31, 2008
I work at UCSF Med Center on Wed. mornings, and there's the best little Farmer's Market there. And they have the best produce! So, for dinner, I've made
Mixed greens/broccoli salad with blue cheese and balsamic vinaigrette. For dessert, there's a strawberry/raspberry tart I made on my lunch hour (working at home). I didn't really use a recipe----created this from my mind---but made a pate sucree crust with gluten-free flour, then put a thin layer of vanilla on that, then the berries on top. It turned out pretty fine. I'm constantly amazed at how well this rice/navy bean flour performs in things.

Yummy Cassarole by Jennifer July 31, 2008
My husband and I like to play "doorknock dinners" at home when we have no idea what we are going to have for dinner. Brian made a cassarole with ground chicken, broccoli, cheddar cheese, cream of chicken soup and whole wheat rigatoni noodles. It was pretty good! For some reason I just love cassaroles - maybe it is the whole comfort food thing.

Cafe food by Lara July 30, 2008
local place... breakfast for dinner. doesn't get better than that. :)

Sushi by Caitlin  July 30, 2008
My local organic grocer, The Good Life, is actually pretty competitive with the bigger markets nearby, and they have a great deli, including a dedicated sushi section----which is where I picked up dinner tonight. Sushi of a few types: tuna, eel, salmon and avocado/crab roll.
That (and probably some leftover blueberry cake) will be consumed this evening. I'm too tired to make salad right now, but I'll eat those little pieces of sliced ginger that come with the sushi, and hope that counts for something! :)

Grilled pizza by Monica July 30, 2008
Sprout's pizza dough thrown on the grill with olive oil then topped with mozarella cheese chunks, ricotta cheese, fresh basil, and tomatoes. It was gourmet!! I wish I would have had taken a picture of me. I was covered in flour trying to be a dough thrower. No luck. Ha-ha! I grilled eggplant too but that just tasted like an olive oil sponge. Yuck!

Shrimp Scampi by Lara July 29, 2008
note: pkg'd parts, so don't think i'm all fancy schmancy! ;D

roasted garlic linguini
roasted garlic scampi spice packet

sauteed some buttons mushrooms (canned) in olive oil spruced up with 2 freshly grated garlic cloves and set aside. 3 tbsp butter and frozen shrimp (i had defrosted with cold water bath) for about 4 minutes. removed the shrimp, left the liquid. added the spice packet the liquid and let bubble for about 10 minutes. added the shrimp and mushrooms back.

tossed with the linguini and topped with freshly cut green onions.

tuuuube crescents (hey, i'm a busy gal!) and served.

yummmmmmmmy pecan bars for dessert.

Boston Pizza by Chris July 29, 2008
Boston Pizza Royal, I think...with many great toppings. So good!

Too Many Blueberries by Caitlin  July 29, 2008
I'm actually fixing this tonight:
Tri-ColorCheese Tortellini w.Toasted Garlic & Broccoli,
Butter Lettuce Salad, &
Blueberry Pudding Cake.
I made the cake this afternoon, when I realized that I have too many blueberries! And, in truth, because I have that gluten-intolerance thing going on, I'm not actually going to eat tortellini (that's for my family). I'm having rice pasta instead, but it doesn't sound as sexy as what they're getting! :)

Giordano's Chicago Stuffed Pizza by Jennifer July 29, 2008

Safeway Shish-kabobs by Lara July 28, 2008
don't think i'll be buying these again. the meat pieces were so large that they didn't cook all the way through. and i now have a big ol grill pan soaking on the stovetop. :/

next time, i'll buy the ingredients and make my own. or maybe try wrapping them in tinfoil and baking them? whatever. i didn't taste the 'marinade' that was supposedly on em anyway. :/ i hate wasting money.

chicken kabobs with red and green peppers - meat kabobs with onions and red peppers.
parmesan cous cous
grilled zucchini spears
grilled pineapple rings

Early supper before Greg's baseball game by Laura July 28, 2008
A four-bean salad (green and yellow beans, kidney and garbanzo beans) with thinly sliced red onion and chopped green pepper tossed with a simple vinaigrette AND a black-forest ham sandwich with cheddar cheese, roasted red pepper and mustard on a ciabatta bun...simple, easy, filling, healthy and delicious!

Chicago Stuffed Pizza by Jennifer July 28, 2008
Giordano's makes an incredible stuffed pizza. Mine had Pepperoni on it because that is Drew's favorite. I also had an incredible avacado salad to go with it.

Mexican Mess by Monica July 28, 2008
This was a left over creation:
Ziti mixed with browned hamburger, Pepper Jack Velveeta cheese, roasted corn seasoned with chipotole peppers, chili seasoning, and lime juice, and some random salsa. It was ugly, but good!

weird hokkien noodle omelette by Chris July 28, 2008
What was that home ec teacher thinking?? Now I love a good omelette, and have enjoyed some rather good ones with asian-style ingredients. This is like a cross between noodle pie and stirfry. One that had been sitting in the fridge all day then arrived home on the back of a bike. Palatable with a cucumber and ginger salad, and a BIG glass of wine.

Wiener Roast Birthday Party by Laura July 27, 2008
Turkery and Chicken Bratwurst sausages (lower in fat than a hot dog!) grilled over an open fire pit with a couple of salads (potato & ichiban), plus strawberry layer cake for dessert. Summer on a plate! The caramel apple AND orange dreamsicle martinis were delicious too!!! ( ;

Saturday Night Dinner Redux by Caitlin  July 27, 2008
Macaroni & Cheese casserole (but I added more veggies to it----in my mother's vernacular, they called this "extending" a dish that already exists)
Green salad
Probably tea (I say probably, because I'm still waiting for dinner to cool...haven't actually eaten any of this yet)
There's not a drop of chocolate left in the house after last night, so I'll eat some of those lovely strawberries instead---not a bad consolation prize.

StarBar by Lara July 27, 2008
had an incredible meal out with hubby. he got the halibut over leeks and heirloom tomatoes and i had the scallops and prawns over fingerling potatoes and baby bok choy.

i had planned on giving him the scallops in exchange for some of his halibut (not a big fan of scallops) but after trying one of them, i decided he could only have one! :D apparently i haven't had a GOOD scallop prepared correctly! the chef came out and i told him this and he chatted about how to prepare them correctly. but instead of trying myself, i think i'll just leave that to him, the professional! :D

topped off with dark chocolate mousse with raspberries and marscapone.

oy. awesome.

Sometimes A Smoothie Redeems Us by Caitlin  July 25, 2008
I confess, I must make reparations for all my indulgences during the recent guest visits/parties and birthdays (my own and Wayman's). That's why tonight, it's just a mango-banana smoothie. I really don't need/shouldn't have anything else! Mea culpa!

Fire by Laurie July 23, 2008
Green Chili Pozole. A very simple recipe I pulled out of Gourmet a couple of years ago. I usually make it with ground pork, but this time I made it with turkey since that's what I had on-hand. It was waaaaay too hot this time - the jalapenos were from my neighbor's patio plant. Almost killed the husband with this one. Not sure how I'm going to handle the left-overs. Put it over rice maybe?

Stuffed Crooked Neck Squash by Victor July 23, 2008
Sliced yellow squash into ~1/4" rounds. Reserved.

Diced (small) crimini mushrooms, carrot, celery, onion, bell pepper. Something like a 1:3:3:2:1 ratio, off-the-cuff, nothing like a classical mirepoix.

Sauteed mushrooms in EV. Salt, pepper, mustard seeds. When mushrooms began caramelizing, added other veggies. Pinch of red pepper flakes. Touch of butter. Removed from heat when carrots were al dente, more or less.

Made pairs of squash rounds, cut out the center from one round which would sit on top of the other, the base. Shredded manchego and smoked gouda (first cheeses I grabbed). Added bit of cheese between rounds, hopefully to melt and hold them together.

Filled top squash rounds with veggie mixture. Topped with cheese and touch of bread crumbs.

Baked in 425 F toaster oven. We ate them with brown rice. Honeydew and blueberries later. No, I'm not a vegetarian.

Wayman's Birthday Dinner by Caitlin  July 23, 2008
For the first time since I’ve been eating wheat-free, I’m afraid I became cavalier at Wayman’s birthday feast, at Villa Romana (one of his favorite restaurants anywhere). When Tony, the owner, sent over a complimentary, light Pizza Bianca, sprinkled with fresh rosemary and oregano flowers (and is probably my favorite pizza in the world), I broke down, I did. I confess. I’ll pay for it later, but it was wonderful in the moment. Instead of visiting the hot love fantasy I SHOULD be having in slumberland, I'm sure I'll dream about Pizza Bianca.

We also shared caprese salad and Caesar salad, then I had the calamari piccata & broccoli.

Dessert was divided amongst us after the restaurant sang: Cheesecake and chocolate mousse.

I’ll never eat again…until tomorrow. This place is wonderfully representative of old San Francisco.

Super Beefy Stew by Chris July 1, 2008
This is a dinner I made a while ago that was very enjoyable.

Super beefy! Almost 4 times the regular amount of beef was put in. The stew included a variety of root vegetables (onion, potato, carrots, turnip).

I later learned, from Master Chef Chris W., that a lot of root vegetables allows for a nice rich gravy - and it sure did - this stew turned out great! Maybe a little hard on the heart with all the beef but a thousand times healthier than a plate of big macs.

dtw tip: clicking on the image should return the full sized original in a new window (may have to click-through the expanded version of the record first (just keep on clicking)).
